CURRICULUM VITAE

BIOGRAPHY

Born in St Leonard's on Sea, England, August 25, 1930.  Early education at Dragon School, Oxford. Came to Canada on evacuee ship with widowed mother and brother, July 1940.   Settled first in Vancouver.  Later moved back and forth between Port Mellon, Gibsons and Vancouver.  Attended school in all three places.  Obliged to quit school in 1948 due to financial problems at home.  Hired out to first logging camp in 1949.  Worked off and on in B.C. woods for next 22 years. In between, worked at wide variety of other jobs - surveyor, smelter worker, pulp-mill hand, shakecutter, baker, etc.
Began writing seriously in late 1950's after abortive fling at professional cartooning.   Practiced this in spare time for many years.  Gradually began to make some headway.  Published first collection of poetry in 1969.  Quit final logging camp in 1971 and went to work at Raincoast Chronicles as Associate Editor.  Began to write and publish prose also at this point and have since worked for numerous publications.   In recent years, have turned to writing fiction.  Published first novel in 1993.  Modest success of this book has led me to concentrate on novels for past few years.  Am not abandoning poetry, however.
